Instead, disaster struck when he was T-boned on the tunnel turn by New York driver Jocko Maggiacomo on the opening lap. Allison had started 28th in the 40-car field and on the opening tour while racing through the tight turn two, he suddenly spun. The 1988 season started out great for the leader of the infamous Alabama Gang as he won the season-opening Daytona 500 for a third time and he did so over his son, Davey Allison.
