\”I started thinking, maybe I can get a couple of trucks with a few bodies and see if I could do it that way,\” said Brighton. Let\’s get it done, Weitekamp said. Gas prices are taking their toll on moving companies. \”We\’ve had to really accommodate for the loss, and raise our prices in just as short a time as two weeks ago,\” said Deter.
If you are going to move, share the economic flood and hire some moving companies to help you out. I think most of it is pent-up demand. Now, it\’s nearly $250– and that means a 15 to 30 percent increase for his customers. More people are skipping moving services altogether and finding a way to do it themselves.
We did a lot of work and called it quits around 5:30 pm, said Beth Vann, a lawyer. \”It\’s always a concern, and we\’re watching our bottom line very closely,\” said Deter. College student Paola Herrera is in the same boat. \”Moving Companies are having a hard time with gas prices.
\”Since most people move in the summer, the high season is making up for Speedy Delivery\’s lost business overall– but summer won\’t last. Many California moving companies reported that their business was off 30 percent or more during the first five months of the year, and a handful of firms were forced out of business, Weitekamp said. Louis and Beth Vann are just the kind of people whom San Diego moving companies have been hoping for. The couple spent most of Friday packing and moving some smaller items to the new house in their own vehicles.
I think there is a bump in real estate transactions, and the moving industry is benefiting from that, Weitekamp said. The tanking economy and high gas prices are hitting all businesses hard, but one man says with the slumping housing market, he\’s getting a \”double whammy. \”But as long as we keep our nose to the ground and make cut costs where we can, we\’ll just keep our fingers crossed and hope that the price of fuel goes down. Summer traditionally is the season when more families relocate households to avoid interfering with children\’s school schedules.
Several local movers reported full work schedules this weekend. Having that extra day gives you one more day to unpack and get settled before you get back to work. Perhaps more importantly, some people who had been sitting on the sidelines and hoping for the real estate market to bottom out decided to go ahead with their transactions. \”I\’m probably going to be doing it all myself,\” she said.
Moving companies may not be able to survive with the rising gas prices. That left the couple with enough time to paddle kayaks into San Diego Bay, where they watched fireworks, she said. \”We\’re always worried that if prices continue to rise, then we don\’t have any other choice, except to pass that on to the consumer,\” said Deter. But when the cost is passed on to the consumer, the consumer goes elsewhere.
\”I\’m just trying to find friends that have trucks or moving vesicles. A couple of factors came together over the past month to revive the market, industry observers said. Everybody moves but not everybody uses moving companies. We\’re beyond capacity, Bloom said.
She considered hiring a moving service, but decided against it. Priority Moving of San Diego had 10 moves lined up through Saturday, including the one for the Vanns, said Bryan Bloom, the company\’s president. Last year, it cost him less than $200 to fill a moving truck. That\’s a big change from previous months.
That should be the case for the Vanns. Moving companies are making a killing on corporate customers now, not just residential customers. There is a lot involved in a move that you have to do yourself, he said. The real estate slump has kept many moving trucks idle for the past year and a half, but business has picked up considerably in recent weeks, said Steve Weitekamp, president of the California Moving and Storage Association.
I think moving companies will survive. Once you see the economy start to turn around you will see a spike in their business.
