I’m not really sure why the Fisher Space Pen is all the rage on the Internet today because the pen and the story of the pen have been all over the Internet since the INternet started sharing rumors and urban legends between peter and paul.
As the story goes this guy named Paul C. Fisher developed a ball point pen that would write in zero gravity, sub zero temperatures and several hundred degree temps. The result of almost two years of development and $1.5 million of his own money is the Fisher Space Pen. AFter development, Fisher sent the pen to NASA and they quickly snapped up 400 of them at $2.95 each. That is a $1180 return on a $1.5 million investment…classic. The real kicker to the Fisher Space Pen story is the flipside. While the American engineer was fervently pursuing a solution for a ball point pen that would write in the vacuum of space, our space race competitiors already had a solution… the pencil.
The Fisher Space Pen is still available today (so he may have made much more than that original $1180, but…) and you can find ads for them all over the Internet, hopefully you can even fid some ads for them right here on this page!
So get your Fisher Space Pen today and have your astronaut writing instrument. And if you are the kind of person that is charged with figuring out the solution to some difficult problems, maybe you should keep a Fisher Space Pen and a Pencil on your desk o remind yourself that sometimes the best solution is the simplest one, you don’t allways need a sledgehammer to drive a nail.

The whole pencil story is a myth. The russians and the americans both used the pencil but the problem with pencils is that you need to sharpen them to use them. The americans found that the shavings that had graphite dust were affecting their air filtering system. Fisher was a genius but utimately a failure.
