Taking the cruise by Disney has been referred to as taking a vacation on a floating theme park. (No, the captain is not Johnny Depp, but a darn good look-alike! And he won’t really enlist your teens. They are more spacious, by about 25%, than what you will find on other cruise lines, and they include clever touches in the cabins to make it easier for the kids and the parents to have their own space.

The lab is all about science. Combining the thrill of sailing through the Caribbean waters and the abundance of activities and entertainment made it easy for all of us to be amused. But what about you? Don’t walk the plank; instead stroll into the recently expanded Vista Spa. Two more Disney luxury liners are under construction to help meet the demand for this very popular cruising conglomerate.

Disney Cruise Lines’ maiden voyage was in 1998, but Disney has been entertaining us all since Steamboat Willie first whistled his merry tune in 1928. The Oceaneers Lab is for ages eight to 12 and it’s out of this world. There is no doubt that children and Disney go hand-in-hand.

Over at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private Caribbean island, teens team up (on their private beach) to build rafts from a few simple supplies. Disney brings their magical touch and attention to detail to the high seas on their custom-built ships.

The fitness area has doubled, and now includes iPod shuffles loaded with non-Disney workout tunes to rev up your workout. Home port to the Disney Cruise ships is the port at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Because Disney is such a family oriented company, you will find that the cabins have all been designed in a family-friendly way. This port is barely an hour’s drive from Disney World, which has made it easy for people to enjoy combination vacation packages that provide a few days at sea with a few days at the Magic Kingdom.

One of these innovations is the way that they rotate their guests through a series of their restaurants during each cruise, so that not only is the food unique each day but so are the surroundings. But, all reports indicate that they are magnificent vessels, built to the high and exacting standards of the Disney name. But within minutes of boarding the Disney Magic my worries went overboard. The new Mediterranean-inspired steam room is totally decadent.

Of course, there are also many things that families can enjoy doing together which will create great lasting memories. Each ship has four different theme restaurants, a “district” that features many entertainment options for the adults, a retail shopping area, a Broadway-style theater with live shows, and also a movie theater. A new “captains bridge” was installed so budding harbour masters can dock the cruise ship via virtual reality. The 13-year-old gave us the heave-ho and the nine-year-old deserted us faster than Jack Sparrow can chug a bottle of whiskey.

Comfy couches, a soda bar serving pop and smoothies, Internet access, huge TVs and all the important (non-violent) computer games needed for chilling out are provided, but so are counsellors looking for lazy loafs.

The ships were christened the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder and are reminiscent of the art-deco style used in the ocean liners that sailed during the early part of the 1900’s. Budding film stars or directors can create movies with the finished product given a premiere screening onboard.

The Stack (Disney Magic) and Aloft (Disney Wonder) are on Deck 11, but don’t expect the teens to be swinging from the sails.

Disney has worked hard to retrofit the ships to get those salty sea dogs — ages 13 to 17 — grinning. In addition, you will also find reservation-only specialty restaurants that you can choose to dine in, as an option. There are also entertainment options and activities designed just for the adults. Nearly an entire deck on both ships is focused on entertaining the kids.

Pool parties and dances are the regular fare, but they toss in crazy events to pry the teens’ butts off the sofa.

And, because the kids are kept happily busy with their activities, the parents can also enjoy their time and relax knowing that the kids are safe and enjoying themselves. Do you think your kids have outgrown a Disney cruise?

That’s what I was afraid of when I booked the trip. The Oceaneers Club for three- to seven-year-olds looks like Peter Pan’s Never Land and is as fun.

Buzz Lightyear oversees the bank of computers, lab experiments and crafts while Professor Goo gets the kids participating in experiments. The main room has heated stone chaise lounges but little steam rooms offer different scents to cleanse your pores and lungs. Many of the packages also include air transportation and needed ground transport. Jack Sparrow.
