In the interview, Will Smith said many couples divorce in L.A. because it is an easy option…much easier than working out the problems between them it seems. “A huge part of the success for [Jada] and I is that we just removed the other options,” said Smith.
But that’s not the story you’ll hear from divorce lawyers all over California. In fact earlier this week we posted a story about the impending divorce, likely to be an ugly one, between Bill Murray and his soon to be ex Jennifer Butler Murray. Many times when a marriages has degenerated divorce is looked at at the inevitable solution and lots of lawyers, especially California Divorce Lawyers it seems, encourage their clients into such a resolution.
If you find yourself in a situation where divorce seems to be the only option, there are some points to consider before you hire your divorce lawyer. The first thing is interview prospective lawyers that want to handle your divorce. You don’t have to hire the first one you go see. Talk to them, find out about previous divorces they’ve worked. You want to hire a divorce lawyer that carries divorce as at least half his or her workload.
You’ll also want to consider a lawyer that is able to act as a mediator. Divorce lawyers that prefer mediation will be looking to solve problems that arise by talking them out, not running to the judge, and thus running up your bill.
another important thing to remember is that you have hired this attorney as your divorce lawyer, not your friend or counselor. Many divorce lawyers literally bill in 15 second increments, 15 SECONDS! That way they can make a quick call, leave a short voice mail and BAM hit your bill. With that in mind, don’t ring them up to ask about your case then go on with them for another half hour about how bad you feel. They are your lawyer trying to handle your divorce. Let them!
Finally, do your best to stay out of the divorce lawyer’s office. Take the advice of Will and Jada Smith and take divorce off the table as an option. If many of the couples seeking a divorce would work as hard at their marriage as they are working at ending it…it might not be such a problem!
It’s so refreshing to see a celebrity couple with that frame of mind. Kudos to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith for fighting to stay together. Divorce is an easy out. And divorce laywers, especially California divorce laywers, prey on couples in a time of weakness. It wasn’t too long ago that professional marriage counseling was sought when a marriage was in trouble. Men and women fought to save that which they knew to be good. Now all you hear is, “I was young and stupid when I got married, and I don’t know what I saw in my spouse.” What a load of crap! You know what you saw, and those things are still in that person. It was your responsibility to keep those things alive in your spouse. Stop letting divorce attorneys ruin your marriage. Take to heart what this article has to say about not treating your divorce attorney like a counselor. The only counsel they’re going to give is that which adds to their pocket book.
