Mel Ferrer has died at age 90. For those that don’t know Mel Ferrer starred in classic fils like Lili and War and Peace and The Sun Also Rises. In addition he produced and directed several movies starring his wife, Audrey Hepburn.

Mel Ferrer died on Monday at his ranch close to Santa Barbara. Mel Ferrer’s most impressive on camera role was in Lili in 1953 when he played a carnival puppeteer that is befriended by a French orphan.

After a few movies, Mel Ferrer turned his efforts to the space behind the camera directing and producing for both movies and television. Ferrer and Audrey Hepburn became engaged in 1954 and married later in that same year in Switzerland. Mel Ferrer and Audrey Hepburn divorced in 1968 and he married his fourth wife, Elizabeth, in 1971.

The son of a doctor from Puerto Rico and a socialite mother, Melchor Gaston Ferrer was born August 25th, 1917 in Elberon, New Jersey. He had a comfortable childhood and attended Princeton University. Mel Ferrer spent a year editing books in New York then started his acting careen in Broadway musicals.
